Tesla Roadster at the 2006 San Francisco Auto Show

image

Tesla Motors’ all-electric vehicle is the star at the 2006 San Francisco Auto Show.  They are the Apple of the automotive world by proving that you can combine elegant design with engineering to create something that will change the market.  This is the first vehicle you see as you descend the escalator and from then on, everything else just pales next to it.  Congratulations to the entire team!

Yahoo’s Hack Day overall winner is Blogging in Motion

image

Yahoo opened its corporate headquarters to hordes of hackers, press and others on Friday and Saturday for its open Hack Day.

The winning project, called Blogging In Motion, combined a camera, a handbag, a pedometer and the Flickr API to create a device that takes a picture after every few steps and then automatically blogs those pictures. The device was created by Diana Eng, Emily Albinski and Audrey Roy, pictured to the right along with the device.

It’s great to see an all female team combine fashion and technology in a different way so congratulations!

Just saw his sculptures at the Sausalito Art Festival this weekend and they are amazing.  He creates biomechanical sculptures with an art deco feel from found scrap pieces of metal.  Check them out at:

ISEA2006 and ZeroOne San Jose

ISEA2006 was held in August this year in conjunction with the first ZeroOne San Jose biennial art and technology festival.  As this was local for me, it was exciting to see a city in the U.S. launch an art and technology festival.  Like any first time attempt, it will get smoother over time but the team is to be congratulated for getting it launched!  Most of the projects in this show required time to absorb and experience fully as many were interactive and required more than passive effort on the part of people attending the show.  The topics which many of the artists were exploring were timely—war, biotechnology, surveillance, location, memory and robotics.  I have launched an artist interview channel on YouTube and have placed several videos from the show there for you to check out.

Laurence Gartel: A Digital Art Innovator

image

A terrific article about this pioneer of digital art.

Laurence Gartel, whose home base is in Boca Raton, Florida, is regarded as the father of the digital art movement. For the past 30 years, his works have been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Joan Whitney Payson Museum in Portland, Maine, the Long Beach Museum of Art in California, the Princeton University Art Museum in New Jersey, and many more, including permanent collections at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. In fact, Gartel’s biography for his pioneering efforts includes being named to various Who’s Who lists.

Born and raised in New York City, Gartel-a self-described “artist from birth"--instructed Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer. Since then, he has rubbed elbows and developed professional associations with many celebrities, including musicians Debbie Harry of Blondie and the late Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. More recently, he has created artwork for pop stars Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Recently, the artist traveled across India with a team of eight people, taking more than 3000 photographs and hours of digital clips-a compilation of art and his interpretations of the country that he is fusing with world music. The multimedia release, titled Gartel: India, will be available this coming January. Meanwhile, Gartel is also hosting his own television show in Miami called Culture Talk, during which he interviews “the movers and shakers” in Florida who contribute their excellence to all things cultural: film, art, music, fashion, and performing arts.

Art takes a crash course in science

Wherever you look now, it seems, some theater, opera house, museum or center is mounting a show, series or symposium on the connections between science and art. As science stakes out an ever-widening swath of our collective consciousness, artists across the board are paying closer and closer attention to a way of thinking and imaging they once regarded as alien, impenetrable and irrelevant to their humanistic enterprise.

Megascale Art

A post about possible scales of art—from subplanetary to universe.

According to Freeman Dyson, we have “good scientific reasons for taking seriously the possibility that life and intelligence can succeed in molding this universe of ours to their own purposes”, and the purpose of an intelligent race would be either scientific or artistic. In other words, they can try to modify their environments either because of their scientific or artistic ambitions.

The Ladybag

image

A group of six women from Simon Fraser University in Canada have developed a purse with RFID technology which responds if items such as a cell phone or wallet are missing from the purse.  In addition:

That Ladybag is equipped with a light-emitting diode screen that contains seven different expressive face patterns.

Five sensors located in different areas on the bag pick up various force and motion generated by the bag’s owner and then translate that into one of the seven different light patterns.

For example, if the person fiddles frantically with the bag, the face with a worried look will light up. If the owner hugs the bag, a happy face emoticon will light up.

image

The Maker Faire in San Mateo, California held its first fashion and technology show yesterday.  It featured the launch of the Black Box Nation line by Diana Eng (Project Runway) and Emily Albinski.  By combining their talents in fashion and technology, they have created a collection greater than the sum of its parts. The lineup included:  biomimetic clothing, functional and electronic component jewelry, mathematical knits, pcb radio, heartbeat hoodie, mobius strip bag, and the inflatable dress conceptual design.  I’m looking forward to seeing the next creations by this talented team!  Enjoy.....
